Using the Tools

Name Icon Description

Maps

Maps Controls map visibility: Hover over the icon to see the list of available maps, then select the desired map.  Shortcut links to the maps are also available at the upper right of the Banner.  Shortcuts
Base Map Base Map Turn on the Base Map: Displays streets, parks, parcels, building footprints, addresses, water bodies, sites of interest, cities and counties.
Zoning Map Zoning Map Turn on the Zoning Map: Displays zoning, streets, parcels, addresses, water bodies, cities and counties.
Parks and Trails Parks and Trails Turn on the Parks and Trails Map: Displays streets, parks, trails, water bodies, sites of interest, cities and counties.
Aerial Map Aerial Map Turn on the Aerial Map: Displays aerial photography, streets, cities and counties.
Overview map Toggle overview map Toggle overview map on/off: Turns the overview map on or off. The overview map displays the main map's extent as a red rectangle within a map that covers a larger extent.

Navigation

Navigation List of Navigation Tools: Hover over the icon to see the list of available navigation tools, then select the desired tool.
Zoom in Zoom in tool Click and drag a rectangle: Click and hold the left mouse button down on the map at one corner of the rectangle, then drag the mouse to the other corner of the rectangle, and release the mouse button. The map will zoom in to the area of the rectangle.
Zoom out Zoom out tool Click and drag a rectangle: Click and hold the left mouse button down on the map at one corner of the rectangle, then drag the mouse to the other corner of the rectangle, and release the mouse button. The map will zoom out so that the current map area will fit into the rectangle drawn. The smaller the rectangle you draw, the more the map will zoom out.

Tool Status
The Zoombar also allows for changing the zoom level.  Click the + or - button or click within the bar.

Pan (recenter) Pan tool Click and drag the map: Click and hold the left mouse button on the map, and then drag the map. The map will be recentered. When this tool is selected or if you see a hand for the mouse cursor identify icon, you can double click on the map to zoom in.
Full extent Full map extent Full extent: Immediately zooms the map out to the area of all features and layers. The active tool does not change.

Tools

Navigation List of Interactive Map Tools: Hover over the icon to see the list of available tools, then select the desired tool.
Print Print Click to open print options: Type the title and subtitle, then click the desired map layout button, and finally click the "Send map to printer" button from the layout window.
Address Locator Address Locator Enter an address to locate: Type the address, select the desired city to search, and then click the "Locate" button.  A small icon is added to the map Address Locator icon  for the best match, and all address matches are returned to the Address Locator window.  Click the desired address from the list to zoom to the location. 
Search Search Click to open search options:

Graphical Search Search Select one of the graphical search tools to select features for the search layer shown in the pulldown. Click the desired tool, then left click on the map to draw the search area. Any matches will return to the Search window.

Text Search Search Or, change to a text search by clicking on the " Text Search" button at the top of the Search window, then select the layer to search.  Lastly, either select the name from the pulldown list or type the text into the textbox and then click Search.

Search results with hyperlinks display a small arrow icon identify icon, which can be clicked to open the link.
Identify Identify tool Click to identify: Left click on the map.  A small icon is added to the map identify icon and layer information is returned to the Identify window.  Layers with hyperlinks display a small arrow icon identify icon, which can be clicked to open the link.

Park Locator Address Locator Click to open a list of Des Moines Parks: Click the desired park from the list to zoom to the location.

Google Streetview Draw Click to open a Google Streetview window: Click the graphic Measure iconand then click on the map.
Draw Draw Click to open drawing options: Select one of the graphical drawing tools, then left click on the map to begin drawing. Click the Measurement icon Measure icon at the top of the Draw window to enable measuring, by turning on the checkbox, and to set units, by changing the pulldowns.

Navigation List of Help Tools and Links: Hover over the icon to see the list of available tools and links, then select the desired tool or link.
Map Center Map Center Click to open the Des Moines Map Center: The Des Moines Map Center is the home page for all Des Moines interactive maps and pdf maps.
Legend and Disclaimer Legend and Disclaimer Click to open the Legend and Disclaimer tool: Click the desired tab to either display the map legend or the disclaimer text.
